Rio Pacheco (Purple Hair Begone!)

Jem and the Holograms is an American animated television series that ran from 1985 to 1988 in the U.S.

In 2012 Integrity Toys released character dolls from the series. I have never seen the show and thus have no sentiment and consequently no yearning to acquire Jem and her female friends.

I love l’homme, though, so Rio Pacheco, Jem’s boyfriend, was a given. Problem is, I looked at his gorgeous face online and promptly did the frantic rush to order thingy without realizing he has purple hair. ACK!

Purple Hair Begone!

WARNING: Using permanent marker to color doll hair carries a high risk of staining the doll’s vinyl. I am NOT recommending this method. Re-rooting Rio is much safer option for getting rid of his purple hair. However, what is done is done and I thought I’d share what Rio looks like with black hair.

I’ve really enjoyed Rio’s appearance on my homme shelf. His chiseled features, blue eyes that hold a steady gaze beneath slightly hooded lids, and full lips guarantee just the right of amount of good old-fashioned man candy.

Now, can anyone recommend a good re-rooter?

  2. He looks SO much better with black hair! However, I would have been horrified to take a Sharpie near him. You are a very brave soul indeed! (^_^) Love the "?" face off shot. P.S. I LOVE your blog. I plan on leaving you a lot of comments for 2013.

    1. Thanks, Cat. So very nice to have you here. (◕‿◕)

Um, yeah... permanent marker hair dyeing is not for the faint of heart. Despite the fact that he is veeeeeeeeeeery happy about the prospect of sharing a pillow with one of Crystal’s girls, I still do not recommend this method.

  3. He looks so much better with black hair! When he had purple hair...it made me think he was going out to a rave. Which is cool, but you can't look like your going out to a rave all day every day. Did you really get 2 Rios? DOUBLE the Hunkiness!

    1. Thanks, V. I know what you mean – purple hair does give him options but he can’t walk around on a day-to-day basis looking like a raver. Yes *blushes* I got two. My dealer was sold out so I bought from another dealer, then my dealer emailed back to say she expected more stock than first thought and my state of franticness induced me to buy from her too. *reddens in embarrassment again*. On top of that, I was almost tempted to go to Holt and Renfrew at their unveiling and buy one just to hurry the process up. Thank goodness I was spared from more silliness by being away from the city that weekend. *sighs of relief*

  4. LOL, he looks brilliant! I never missed an episode of the show (still have some on vhs, lol) and Rio was kind of a dick. I will never understand what Jerrica (Jem) saw in that douche. He looks good as a doll though. If only I weren't so so cheap, I would get every character, even Rio's punk behind, because I still love the show and can sing just about every song from it. ^_^

    1. Thanks, Muff. Your enthusiasm for the show almost tempts me to watch it, but by the sounds of it, I might not like Rio. I guess it wouldn’t matter, my Rio is a changed man now and will receive a new name and a new girlfriend (maybe one at Crystal’s house *winks*).

  5. While I'm a fan of purple hair in general, the black is so much better! I love his delicate hands too. Can't wait to see him in action.

    1. His hands are different from other homme. I like them too, and the nice thing is that he came with a second set.

  6. Hello from Spain: I really like this guy but I do not like the color of his hair. There is not a natural color for a boy. You can dye his hair with styling products. Keep in touch

    1. I agree with you. Purple hair on a man is very unexpected. I guess people who love the show don’t mind but, like I said, I’ve never seen the show and so was not attached to it. Thanks for stopping by, Marta.

  7. I am in the process of rerooting my dolls with synthetic hair instead of embroidery thread. The thread has it's upsides, but It just doesn't hold up to heavy-duty handling. Miss Dixie is going first. She has a new CY Coolgirl body ordered -- hopefully in the right color this time! -- and her curls have pretty much gone flat, so I'll just give her a whole makeover.

    1. I’m trying to decided whether to attempt my second Rio’s re-root or send him out. Sounds like you have a grip on this re-rooting thing and I envy that skill. Miss Dixie is lucky to be getting new hair and body. Crossing my fingers the body skin tone is a perfect match.

    2. Ah, don't be afraid of rerooting. It's tedious, but not difficult. I got the body; it's not a 100% match, but once I get her tatted up I doubt anyone will notice. I finished her re-root today and lacquered the inside of her head to hold it in place. I'll let it dry overnight, then give her a near boiling water shower to straighten, let it dry, then trim and style it.

    3. Thanks for the encouragement. I think I am going to tackle this. What is the lacquer you mention?

    4. Well, for embroidery-thread hair I used hot glue . . . but I didn't think that would work very well for synthetic hair because it's so fine. So I used the clear lacquer spray paint like you use for clear-coating model cars. Technically, you shouldn't have to use anything to keep it in place but I'm paranoid. I like to have *something*.

And her curls turned out too curly so I'm going to have to find a way to loosen them up. Maybe some steam . . . ?

  8. Jem was one of my favourite tv shows of my childhood and I wanted the Hasbro dolls inspired by the show soooooooo bad!!!! But my parents didn't want me playing with dolls, let alone buy them! I don't like the Integrity Jem and Sinergy, they look like two drag queens, instead it's been love at the first sight with Rio. He will be one of my purchase for the 2013, but I let him with his purple hair, since I decided to have a 1/6 scale punk rock band.
Even in late. Happy New Year!

    1. Oh, Sergio, I’m sorry you didn’t get to enjoy dolls as a child but so glad you are making up for it now.

It makes perfect sense for you to keep Rio’s hair purple since you have such happy memories of the TV show, and a punk rock band will be a great way to showcase him. You’re not the only one who has found the Jem sculpt harsh. I was reading a blog the other day where the author showed a photo of Jem with a tweaked screening, suggesting that IT could have softened her features by lightening the eyebrows and giving Jem fuller lips. The doll did look better after the tweaks.

Happy New Year to you too, Sergio. So happy to have you as a follower.

    2. I understand, Sergio. I wasn't allowed to have Barbies or other fashion dolls as a child. My mom thought they would screw up my self image. Recently she came over to my house when I had my dolls set up for a Halloween party. She asked if she had deprived me. I told her yes. :p

  9. The black hair does look better. I prefer your outfit to his original outfit. Lovely color shrimp shirt, but not sure that I would have chosen it for this character. Shrug.

Just curious, but has Harper seen the new guys - the new Rios - or is she still enchanted with Max?

    1. Thanks, D. Now all he needs is a new name so the last vestiges of Rio can be erased.

Harper has been suspiciously quiet. I think I should leave well enough alone. But then, again, maybe I shouldn’t believe everything I think.

  10. I never watched the show, so I'm not familiar with the characters. I'm not crazy about the purple hair myself. I think it's great you got two Rios--black hair for more subdued occasions and purple hair for the wilder affairs, I mean times! LOL :-)

  11. Dang he is fine...I didn't even notice he had hair...um um um But, the black hair and gorgeous apartment makes him even more lucious! LOL
