Fashion Royalty Renew and Refresh Trunk

Loft Surroundings Collection (spring 2006)
500 pieces
Retail $224.99

I hauled out my Renew and Refresh Trunk today. What a whopper! I bought it when it was released. Hard to believe that was six years ago. Harder still to believe is that I’ve only had it out to play with a few times. It’s fabulous, so why haven’t I played more with it? Like I said, it’s a whopper – it’s been easier, for the sake of space, to store it in its original box for protection, up high, out of the way.

One of the things that irks me about this piece (and it’s a tiny irk) is that the mirror makes it difficult to photograph without getting a reflection of the photographer in the background. I know there are ways to get around it, but I really want to be able to photograph the dolls without the bother.

The second thing that irks me (tiny irk) is that it doesn’t look like a built-in when set up. Obviously, for most collectors this is not a problem – I’ve seen absolutely amazing photos of different ways people have used their trunk. But for me, it’s all about creating little lives in little spaces that look as realistic as I can make them. I don’t always achieve this, but I try.

Today I built a surround (fitted around the trunk so there are no spaces). I wallpapered the surround and added matching side walls. And I did away with that irksome mirror.

A trunk within a trunk.

I hope you feel inspired to dig out your unused pieces and have as much fun as I did.

Cheers!

    1. Thanks, Muff. It’s amazing to me how, after all these years, this piece still rocks. I hope IT makes more furniture pieces in the future.

  3. Eyes wide and rapt. Oh this is stunning. I like the silver vase, the clear
chairs, and the bright accents against the black and white. It looks like a very classy, expensive room ;-D

It is fun to come across something you bought years ago but had not fully used until the right moment. Well done again.

  4. *picks jaw up off floor* It's fantabulous! Clever solution to the mirror problem and I love the surround you made! It definitely has that built-in look now. The ghost chairs are the perfect touch, too.

  7. Ingenious! I have been working on my own trunk for my FR doll and the stripe is exactly what I have been looking for but unable to find anywhere. Can you tell me where you got it? Please say it was online and easily accessible :)

    1. Oh fantastic, you have a trunk! Aren't they fabulous? Is yours a Renew/Refresh or a different model? Would you be willing to please share photos of yours when you have completed your dio, I would so love to see it.

As to the scrapbooking paper, it came from DeSerres (Canadian arts and crafts store). The sheets of paper were bought loose, not in a packet, and not sold online. I would venture a guess that it is still available; I have a vague memory of seeing it still on the shelf during my last visit about 4-6 weeks ago.

Where are you located? I use Michaels in the U.S. They also have stores in Canada, but I don’t know what their Canadian stores are like. DeSerres is located in various providences throughout Canada. I’ve no idea what people use in the UK.

  8. I live in Toronto and quick google search turned up a DeSerres not far from me. I do not have a Refresh/Renew but am making my own trunk. I will post pics once it is complete.

Thank you so much for your help.

  9. I am located in Toronto and a quick Google search indicated that there is a DeSerres not far from me. I don't have the Renew/Refresh trunk, but am fashioning my own, though it wont be nearly as elegant as the space you have created with your trunk. You really have an eye for detail and accessorizing. Where did you find things like the small mirror, lamp, vase of flowers, etc.

I will post pics when I have finished the trunk.

Thanks for all of your help!

    1. Great! I wish you best of luck finding the paper (check the wedding section papers, because it’s a slightly smaller paper).

Your project sound ambitious and there’s nothing more I love than creative people who start from scratch. Don’t be shy about sharing your results. In the meantime, the mirror is a photo frame with craft mirror backing. The frame cost approx. $1 at the Dollar Store (comes in black, silver, and white). I bought my mirror backing from Michaels in Pennsylvania, but I noticed the Dollar Store in Canada carries it, so you shouldn’t have any problem finding it. The lamp is a miniature floor lamp; the shade was replaced with a Barbie one. Mini floor lamps can be found on eBay or any online mini store. I bought the flowers years ago on eBay – I switched the original vase to a thrift store find.

I hope that helps. I have a contact page on my website www.roville.net to swap email addresses if you need more info.

      Best regards,
      Ro

  10. Hi Ro!

Your diorama is amazing. I have the refresh & renew trunk and you have inspired me to use it like this. I also bought a few months back 2 of the new Barbie tall white wardrobes and I'm not sure which I should use for my wardrobe room!

I know where to find the wallpaper (Michael's etc, scrapbook paper) but what I have not been able to find is miniature (1/6 scale look) panelling and white borders. Could you by chance help me on where to find these? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps you could email me at kristine_h@shaw.ca

    Thank you so much!
    Hugs,
    Kristine

    1. Hi Kristine,

Love your enthusiasm. Feel free to contact me via my contact page at www.roville.net if my answer is not what you are looking for. I’ll try to answer best I can. What I use for this dios’ walls is foamcore that is scored and bent to create a wall that fits around the trunk. The wall finish is scrap-booking paper, and the white strips are a combination of craft wood (Michaels) and white craft tape.

Good luck with your project and don’t forget to share your results.

  11. Hello my dear, I tried contacting you via your profile but didn't get a response. I am doing the scoring and bending, but it doesn't stay flesh to the trunk like yours. How did you get the bent walls to stick right up against your trunk? Please email me at kristine_h@shaw.ca - will be easier to talk there than here! Thank you sooo much.

    Hugs
    Kristine
